MARRIAGES
The crude marriage rate in Australia increased from 5.1 to 5.2% in the years 2013 to 2014.
Interestingly, civil celebrants have overseen the majority of marriages and this has been the case since about 1999 in Australia.
The current median age at marriage is 31.5 years for males and 29.6 years for females.
DIVORCES
The crude divorce rate decreased from 2.1 to 2.0 in the years 2013 to 2014.
The median duration from marriage to divorce in 2014 was 12.0 years (this is down slightly from the previous year.
The median age at divorce for males was 45.2 years of age and the median age of females was 42.5 years of age.
Divorce Applications
Joint applications for divorces has been increasing for the past two years. In fact, the largest proportion of divorce applications were from joint applicants, accounting for 41.5% of divorces. Female applicants accounted for 32.5% of divorce applications while male applicants accounted for 26.0%.
Children involved in Divorce Applications
Divorces involving children represented 47.0 percent of all divorces granted compared with 47.4 percent in 2013.
There were 40,152 children involved in divorce in 2014.
Weird Facts
Weird Fact: The most popular date for getting married in 2015?
On Saturday 12 April 2014, Australia echoed to the sound of “I do”, as 2,056 couples exchanged vows across the country. This was the day in 2014 when the most marriages were celebrated, according to a report released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in November 2015.
Another weird fact: Most popular seasons for getting married?
Probably not weird – you are likely to know already – it is Spring and Autumn!
“Most marriages take place in spring and autumn with almost two-thirds of all marriages occurring in these seasons,” said Mr Paul Hoffmann from the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics).
